A Plot point is an event in your story that changes the course of the story.
According to Screenwriting books, a Three Act structure usually has 2 plot points. One at the end of Act 1 and the other at the end of Act 2. This might hold true for Hollywood Movies, but in the Indian context, where we have an Intermission half way through the movie, the Midpoint can also be considered as a Plot point.
Q: Okay, but how do Plot points help me finish my screenplay?
A: The Keyword to remember here is: 'Milestones'.
Writing a screenplay is like going one a road trip to your favourite destination.
On a road trip, Milestones act as reference points reassuring that you are on the right path to your destination.
Similarly, figuring out the plot points in your story before sitting down to write your screenplay will prevent you from unwanted diversions. This practice also provides you with the confidence needed to complete the screenplay because all you have to do is connect those dots and fill the gaps in between!
