Why every Scene you write should have a 'Cause' & an 'Effect'?

Updated: Sep 30, 2020

A: Think of a Train that has 40 compartments. In order for the Train to run smoothly, each individual Compartment has to be strongly connected to the Compartment before and after it.

Now, think of your your Screenplay as the Train and the Scenes that make up your Screenplay as those Individual Compartments. Similarly, think of the front connection of the your current compartment as the 'Cause' and it's rear connection as the 'Effect' of a scene respectively. If either of the connection is broken, the Train will have a hard time running. Same applies to your Screenplay.

If you have a compartment that is connected neither to the front nor to the back compartment, there is no use having it. You will have to remove it. Same is the case with a scene if it has no connection with the one before and after it. It becomes an Isolated scene that is in no way helping the story move forward. Move to Trash!
